Shillong Peak
About Shillong Peak
Shillong Peak is the highest point in and around Shillong city, standing at 1,965 metres (6,447 ft) above sea level. On clear days, the views from the peak are extraordinary — the entire city sprawls below, the Assam plains stretch to the north, and on exceptionally clear winter days, Bhutan's mountains are visible in the distance.
The peak is under the control of the Indian Air Force, and visitors are required to obtain a pass from the Air Force station at the base. Despite this minor administrative step, it is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in all of Northeast India.
The surrounding area is forested with rhododendrons and orchids, making the drive up scenic in its own right. Early mornings offer the clearest visibility before the characteristic Shillong mist rolls in. Sunrise visits are particularly special.
