Mawlynnong Village
About Mawlynnong Village
Mawlynnong, declared Asia's Cleanest Village by Discover India magazine, is a shining example of community-driven environmental stewardship. The entire village — homes, pathways, public spaces — is spotlessly maintained by its 95 households, with zero plastic and organic waste composting done communally.
Beyond its cleanliness, Mawlynnong is a living museum of Khasi culture. The village is also notable for its matrilineal society, where lineage and inheritance pass through the mother. You'll find beautiful traditional homes with flower-decorated verandahs, bamboo dustbins at every corner, and an extraordinary sense of community pride.
A short walk from the village leads to a bamboo sky walk offering breathtaking views of the Bangladesh plains. Nearby single-root bridges and community-run homestays make Mawlynnong an ideal overnight stop.
